Kamala D. Harris, U.S. Senator for California

Senator Harris Wraps Busy State Work Period With Roundtable and Town Hall Upon Return From Middle East

Friend -
Senator Harris kicked off a busy April state work period after her first official trip overseas, returning home to explore innovative solutions to put Californians back to work and hear from constituents at a town hall.
On Thursday, Senator Harris, a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Budget, convened a roundtable with representatives from the Worker Education & Resource Center (WERC) and Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC) to discuss the need to invest in job training for a 21st century economy and speak out against President Trump’s proposed cuts to workforce development programs that train workers for good-paying jobs. The Senator later toured LATTC’s Allied Health Simulation Lab and discussed their certificate program that allows students to earn educational credits while exploring various allied health pathways before deciding on a career.

On Friday, Senator Harris held a town hall before a packed crowd at Holman United Methodist Church in Los Angeles, hearing directly from Californians about critical issues facing communities and the country. Senator Harris answered questions that ranged from protecting the environment and preserving the Affordable Care Act to President Trump’s immigration policy. Here’s how she kicked it off.
“I believe this is a moment in time almost unlike any other that is requiring us to fight for those ideals,” Senator Harris said. “In terms of what everybody can do, the letter writing, the phone calling, the emails, the marches are making a difference. We cannot tire; there is too much at stake with all the conversations we are having. So what do people do? Keep doing what you are doing. There is nothing too small to put your energy and time in to.”

The Senator also traveled to Iraq and Jordan, meeting with servicemembers and U.S. personnel across the Middle East to discuss the challenges they face in the fight to defeat ISIS. Senator Harris later visited the Za’atari Refugee Camp and witnessed firsthand the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis under President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
